Teen seriously injured after fall from rope swing near South Thompson River

KAMLOOPS — Traffic was held up along the East Trans Canada Highway just before noon on Monday (Mar. 22) after Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) received a call of a 13-year-old boy stuck in a culvert.

When crews arrived on the scene, KFR found the individual was not stuck in a culvert but had sustained injuries after falling off of a rope swing near the South Thompson River.

“Engine 3 crew arrived and found a kid down about a 30-foot embankment with injuries. We’re not sure what his injuries were,” Lt. Chris Pretula tells CFJC Today. “Engine 3 had Rescue 1 respond to help with the rope rescue to help get the patient up the bank. Rescue 1 arrived on scene and used mechanical advantage and their ropes to bring the patient up.”

Kamloops Fire Rescue used their basket stretcher to load the patient, before carrying him to BC Emergency Health Service ambulances that were waiting on the scene. In an emailed statement, BC EHS reports the patient suffered serious injuries and was transported to Royal Inland Hospital.
