KAMLOOPS — Kamloops’ top officer told city council Tuesday (March 9)he wonders if it’s time to re-think how they do business in order to save lives.

Kamloops RCMP Superintendent Syd Lecky says they’re not charging people with simple possession anymore, and focusing on those who provide illicit drugs. Lecky says ” We’ve had record deaths in our community and throughout the province for fentanyl, and related products. It seems to me that the time has come when we need to be talking about safe supplies.”

Lecky adds they’re not getting further ahead in preventing overdose deaths, and the pandemic has made it worse.

Meantime, the Kamloops’ RCMP Year End report showed a 59 per cent increase in business break and enters in 2020.
