KAMLOOPS — In the weeks before the Brier, it was a lonely time for Matt Dunstone training at McArthur Island all by himself.

“At times, it gets very difficult, no doubt,” said the skip representing Saskatchewan for a second straight year. “Pretty fortunate to have a great support crew with our team that always comes up with new practice ideas to kind of keep things fresh, and if anything it’s a great way for me to get more reps [than] I would with the team.”

Dunstone says more than ever before in his curling life, he’s been able to work on techniques coming out of the hack among other things. It’s a stark contrast to his Saskatchewan teammates, who haven’t been on the ice since November.

“Feeling very fortunate on our side of the nation to be throwing rocks like we have been,” said Dunstone. “But from the sounds of it, things are starting to change and hopefully get some rocks throwing soon.”

They’ll be throwing plenty of stones over the next couple weeks with the Brier starting Friday night and running until March 14. Saskatchewan won’t be the only team with a little rust entering the national championship.

“Very strange. Going into a national championship, that’s when you’re at the top of your game, when you’re trying to peak. It’s going to be very different in that sense. There’s no excuses. The plan is to still peak for the event, but it’ll be strange, and our team’s not the only one in that boat.”

Dunstone and his rink are looking to build on a third-place finish at last year’s Brier. He came out of nowhere to have a terrific tournament and catch the eye of the nation.

“I’m guessing we still won’t be up there with the favourites, and we’re more than happy with that. We love that,” he said. “But we fully have the expectation to go and win it with how close we came last year with the teams we beat. We fully expect ourselves to go out there and compete, and if we play well, we expect ourselves to win as well.”
