Tranquille Road upgrades resume, traffic flow changed

KAMLOOPS — Tranquille Road is once again under construction.

A $13 million project to install a new sewer main has moved into the section between Singh Street and 12th Street.

The City’s contractor, Extreme Excavating, finished the stretch between Southill and Singh Street in November.

“It will look pretty much the same as last year, installation of a deep sewer main and associated grade construction roadworks,” said Capital Projects Manager Darren Crundwell. “We are making some pedestrian improvements at some of the intersections, sidewalks, beautifying where we can, adding landscaping in the medians and whatnot.”

During construction, motorists are required to follow signs marking the detour route. Work is expected to be complete by July or August.

“We will implement weekends and night shifts if needed, if we’re having issues, if we’re falling behind,” Crundwell said. “The contractor’s really good at that. We’ve got a schedule in place and if we start slipping we’ll put some measures in there to make sure we get back on track.”

The south shore will also have its fair share of altered traffic patterns when paving work begins along Columbia Street. The City’s goal is to start that work in May.

“We’re paving all the way from Notre Dame to McGill and then also from Notre Dame to the highway, so Columbia Street to the highway, then also Columbia Street, the McGill and Summit intersection, that whole leg, so there’s three legs in there, all that, pretty much the busiest area in the city,” Crundwell said.

The City also plans to resurface stretches of Lansdowne, Victoria and Battle Street.

“A lot of surface work and paving work,” Crundwell said. “Tranquille is really the only project with the deep utilities, the rest of it is surface work, but it’s still pretty disruptive.”
