Kamloops man wanted in 2019 kidnapping arrested after Vancouver traffic stop

KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops man who has been on the run for 11 months has been arrested after a traffic stop in Vancouver.

In a news release, Cst. Crystal Evelyn of Kamloops RCMP says 33-year-old Robert Rennie was arrested by Vancouver Police Department officers at 2:20 a.m. Monday (Mar. 1).

Rennie was one of three men charged in an alleged hostage-taking incident on Valentine’s Day of 2019. The incident involved multiple locations in Kamloops, with RCMP tracking the suspects to Kelowna, arresting them after a standoff.

Michael Mathieson and Justin Daniels were both convicted and sentenced in the attack, receiving 6.5 years and 7.5 years in prison, respectively.

Rennie was charged with armed robbery, assault with a weapon and forcible confinement. A judge allowed him out on bail and he fled a halfway house in April, 2020.

Evelyn says he was at large until his arrest in Vancouver Monday.

Rennie will be held in custody until his next court appearance, scheduled for March 11.
