KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are reminding parents to talk to their children about speaking to strangers after a report of a suspicious person near a school last week.

Last Wednesday (Feb. 24), RCMP were informed of a vehicle circling the block as two kids were walking in the Meadowland Crescent area of Barnhartvale.

Police say the community helped them track down the driver of that vehicle, and they have had a discussion with them.

“We were able to talk to the person, get their reason for being in that area, and obtain their information,” Cst. Crystal Evelyn said. “If there’s any other reports, we’ve got the information that we need to further that investigation. As it stands right now, the explanation was reasonable, and the family’s been notified.”

While there was a reasonable explanation in this case, Evelyn said this situation is an opportunity for parents to speak to their children about personal safety.

“If you’ve got a friend that can come with you, bring that friend along,” she said. “Keep your parents in the loop and keep adults in the loop too as to where you are. By adults, I mean your safe adults. If you’re home with grandma and grandpa and you’re going to a friend’s house, make sure you say where you’re going, what time you’ll be back and that sort of thing.

“Be aware of your surroundings all the time. Just like any of us, when you come out of a building or we get into a car, have a look around, see who’s there.”
