Landfill reopens after fire

KAMLOOPS — The Mission Flats landfill reopened for business yesterday after being closed most of Saturday because of a stubborn fire in the scrap metal pile near the landfill entrance.

The fire broke out Saturday morning, and crews responded quickly to deal with the blaze. A number of old refrigerators were among the debris, and residents of the city were advised to stay indoors if they could smell the smoke. Apparently the smoke was potentially toxic.

There were no hydrants near the fire, and Platoon Captain Troy Grant said the fire department had to ferry water tenders back and forth to be able to deal with the blaze.
