Kamloops Fire Rescue responds to scrap pile fire at Mission Flats landfill

KAMLOOPS — A large plume of black smoke was visible throughout the city this morning (Feb. 27) as Kamloops Fire Rescue crews were called to fire at the Mission Flats landfill.

City Streets and Environmental Services Manager Glen Farrow says firefighters are still on scene extinguishing the blaze.

“Currently not impacting any of the landfill active filling areas. It’s entirely located where the appliances and metal is discarded, right at the front end of Mission Flats landfill.”

Farrow says the landfill is currently closed and residents are asked to avoid the area to give firefighters space to work.

KFR has not yet stated what ignited the flames, but does say in a Facebook post the smoke from appliances burning (including refrigerators) can be toxic. KFR is requesting anyone downwind being affected by the smoke to shelter in place in their homes.

Farrow adds that the pile is mostly scrap metal appliances but there are residual items in there, and it’s part of why residents are asked to stay away for now.

“If you are needing to do some yard clean up and needing to go to the landfill today – Barnhartvale landfill is open for the public. We will know more shortly about when we will be re-opening.”

As of 12:30 p.m, the City says Mission Flats Landfill will remain closed to the public for the day.
