Kamloops restaurants relieved to have permanent wholesale liquor pricing

KAMLOOPS — Bars and restaurants in Kamloops got a silver lining this week, with the province announcing their ability to buy liquor at wholesale prices will be permanent.

In June of 2020, liquor serving establishments were given temporary access to wholesale prices to offset revenue losses during the pandemic. Now the B.C. government has said it will stay this way. Given the financial toll COVID-19 has taken, local bars and restaurants were glad to get a break.

“We honestly are so happy,” says Noble Pig Co-Owner Maeghan Summers. “It’s a step in the right direction. Our industry obviously has gone through a lot of changes in the last little while and to have something like this I think evens the playing field for a lot of operators. It allows us to try and maximize revenues.”

As wages, food costs, and other expenses go up, restaurants say paying wholesale prices for liquor will let them keep customer drink costs at a reasonable level.

“Ultimately… it allows us to extend some of those discounts on to our consumers. We’re about to go into a very price sensitive market and so being able to give our consumers value when they come into our establishment is really important for our business platform and I know for many. It’s something that we’re really, really relieved about.”
