KAMLOOPS – One man is dead following a drug-related killing in Kamloops Saturday (Feb. 13) night.

RCMP say officers were called out at 7:50 p.m. to a report of shots being fired at the Howard Johnson Inn along Columbia Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues. When they arrived, they found the male victim in one of the units. The name or the hometown of the man, thought to be in his twenties, has not been released.

Based on the preliminary investigation, police determined the shooting was targeted and related to the drug scene.

The RCMP Serious Crime Unit has taken over the investigation and is being assisted by frontline officers. Police have taped off an area at the back of the building to protect evidence for the investigation. Two rooms at the Star Lodge several blocks away, are being held as part of the investigation.  Mounties says investigators are also conducting interviews and neighbourhood inquiries. And they are hoping people in the area will check any video recordings they may have, to see if they caught any suspicious activity.

While the killer is still on the run, Mounties believe there are no immediate safety concerns to the general public because of the nature of the homicide.

“This homicide occurred early in the night at a time when many people are usually still awake,” said Kamloops RCMP Constable Crystal Evelyn. “If anyone saw anything suspicious at all that they think may be related to this investigation, please contact us right away. Maybe you saw someone hanging around the area who caught your eye, or maybe it was someone running away in a hurry around 8:00 p.m. when the call came in – if you think that something you heard or saw may be related, please let us know.”

Investigators are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 or report it anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
