KAMLOOPS — The province’s Ministry of Education has released details on the plans for a rebuilt Parkcrest Elementary School.

Parkcrest Elementary was destroyed by fire in the fall of 2019.

According to a news release issued Monday morning (Jan. 25), construction on a $34.84 million replacement school will begin in the summer of 2022.

The new facility will feature 510 spaces — capacity for 120 more students in anticipation of further growth in Brocklehurst.

It will also include an expanded gymnasium and change room facilities, thanks in part to a $2.5 million infusion from the City of Kamloops.

“This not only benefits students, but would also be available for booking by community and sport groups, providing much-needed access to indoor recreation space in Kamloops,” said Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian in the release.

Anticipated opening date for the new school is spring of 2024.

In the meantime, Parkcrest staff and students are occupying the former George Hilliard Elementary School building nearby.
