B.C. averages 443 new cases of COVID-19 per day over the weekend; 31 more deaths recorded

VICTORIA — B.C.’s COVID-19 pandemic produced 1,330 new cases of the virus over the past three days — an average of about 443 cases per day.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported the new cases in a news conference Monday (Jan. 18) — 584 cases on Saturday, 445 on Sunday and 301 on Monday.

Two-hundred fifty-seven of the new cases over the weekend were found in Interior Health, for an average of about 86 per day.

The 1,330 new cases bring B.C.’s total to 61,447 since the pandemic began, spread through B.C. as follows:

  • 14,009 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 281)
  • 37,806 — Fraser Health (up by 548)
  • 1,285 — Island Health (up by 65)
  • 5,313 — Interior Health (up by 257)
  • 2,911 — Northern Health (up by 166)
  • 128 — Reside outside of Canada (up by 13)

There are 4,326 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Monday, down by nearly 300 from Friday. Of the active cases, 343 are in hospital with 68 in critical or intensive care.

Within Interior Health, there are 1,058 active cases, up 66 from Friday. There are 38 people in hospital in the region, with 10 in critical care.

Thirty-one more people have died of the virus, bringing the death toll in B.C. to 1,078. Four of the weekend deaths took place in Interior Health, lifting the region’s death toll to 50.

At least 6,865 people are under active public health monitoring due to exposure to known COVID-19 cases. The total does not include Northern Health due to reporting problems.

A total of 54,656 are considered fully recovered from COVID-19, or 89 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Dr. Henry reported a total of 87,346 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered thus far, including 46,675 over the past week.

Henry says this week, B.C. expects to vaccinate 26,775 more people.
