IMPAIRED DRIVING

Impaired crash critically injures driver, kills dog near Vavenby

Jan 11, 2021 | 8:49 AM

VAVENBY, B.C. — RCMP are looking for any witnesses after a vehicle collision injured several people and killed a dog Sunday (Jan. 10) along Highway 5.

Cpl. Mike Halskov says in a release police and emergency responders were called to a two-vehicle crash north of Vavenby around 3:15 p.m Sunday.

Police says a beige SUV headed north on Highway 5 had collided with a southbound black SUV. The Alberta man behind the wheel of the beige vehicle was airlifted to hospital in critical condition while the other vehicle’s occupants suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Several dogs were inside the black SUV and Halskov says unfortunately one of the animals died in the crash, while another was injured.

According to RCMP, road and weather conditions do not appear to be contributing factors to this collision. Investigators found evidence of impaired driving by alcohol and drugs from the driver of the beige SUV.

Now, Central Interior Traffic Services in Clearwater are asking any witnesses to come forward or anyone with dash camera footage of the beige SUV prior to the crash. Investigators also want to speak with the driver of a commercial vehicle which was passed by the SUV prior to the collision.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call RCMP in Clearwater at (250) 674-2237 and quote file 2021-169.
