First Nation issues lockdown due to COVID-19 cases in its community

CANIM LAKE, B.C. — A First Nation located in the Cariboo has issued a lockdown due to concerns over the number of cases of COVID-19 in its community.

The lockdown was issued by the chief and council of the Canim Lake Band, located east of 100 Mile House, in response to the discovery of nine cases of the virus among its membership.

The lockdown went into effect yesterday (Jan.8) and will be lifted at a time still to be determined.

“A curfew will be in place from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily”, reads a news release issued by the Canim Lake Band. Band members had until 6 p.m. last night to make their supply runs to town to purchase necessities.

The band says checkpoints will be set up to restrict traffic in and out of the community and there will be no access to any individual that does not live there. Some exceptions will be allowed for medical reasons, wellness checks of family members, and to make supply runs, not more than once a week.
