Poor conditions, crashes close Merritt-to-Hope Coquihalla stretch

MERRITT, B.C. — Poor weather and hazardous road conditions have led to the closure of the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Hope.

In a tweet, Drive BC says there have been multiple vehicle incidents on that stretch of highway.

It’s expected that route will be closed until at least 4:00 p.m., which is the time listed for the next update.

Meantime, Environment Canada’s Doug Lundquist says it’s not likely Monday’s snowstorm will last through the evening.

“It’s going to end probably abruptly later this afternoon or early in the evening. I don’t think we’ll get snow through whole night. It looks like it could end rather quickly when it finally does,” Lundquist told CFJC Today. “Then we get a really strong blast of northwest air — not cold Arctic air, northwest aloft coming from the Pacific. It’s not going to really cool down. We’ve got a high tomorrow of +2, which might try to melt some of that snow down at the very lowest levels.”
