OVERDOSE CRISIS

Memorial tree provides space for grieving during overdose crisis

KAMLOOPS — Christmastime can be difficult for those who are grieving. With the overdose crisis worsening in B.C., many families will be missing a loved one this holiday season.

A memorial tree has been set up at the North Kamloops Library. People are invited to bring photos and hang ornaments on the tree to remember the life of someone they loved.

“It’s not always a holly jolly good time,” said Sandra Tully, a member of Moms Stop the Harm. “And if you’re grieving someone, we just thought that this would be a nice way of being able to express your grief.”

The tree will remain up in the library until Dec. 30.

During the pandemic, the number of overdose deaths in B.C. has been rising. Tully hopes the memorial tree will bring awareness to the issue.

“I’m not sure what the rest of the year will look like when the numbers come out. I’m not expecting anything better than what we’ve seen in the past and we are losing valuable community members. It needs to be addressed and people need to be aware and understand what’s happening.”
