KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are reporting a significant increase in break-and-enter incidents through the third quarter of 2020.

According to a report to the City of Kamloops Community Services Committee,, break-and-enters at businesses have increased by around 50 per cent. Police report 98 files from July to September compared to 65 from the same time period in 2019.

Break-and-enters at homes have increased by 10 per cent with 54 incidents.

Vehicles have become a smaller target to thieves, with thefts of vehicle and thefts from vehicles both down.

According to Supt. Syd Lecky, distracted driving and intersection tickets have decreased because Traffic Services staffing was reduced in response to the pandemic.

Reports of intimate partner violence increased over Q3 of 2019, however, fewer incidents have resulted in charges being filed.

Car 40 had a busy quarter, with 291 interventions compared to 93 in 2019. This is due in part to increased use of drugs, some of which prompted an Interior Health drug alert.
