Local MLA criticizes throne speech for lack of jobs plan, long term care initiatives

Dec 7, 2020 | 4:45 PM

KAMLOOPS —The BC NDP have kicked off a brief session in the legislature with today’s (Dec. 7) throne speech.

The throne speech focused heavily on a response to the pandemic and economic recovery. The speech promised improvements to health care, including a Hospital at Home initiative to reduce congestion in healthcare facilities.

The government is also promising financial aid for families and individuals through a recovery benefit.

Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone is the opposition critic for jobs, economic recovery and innovation. He says the throne speech left a lot of other challenges unaddressed.

“What we should be doing in this session, is we should be addressing the challenges in long-term care,” Stone said. “Why are rapid testing tools not being utilized to keep our seniors safe? Why are there still long term care workers working at multiple facilities when we’re being told that’s not the case? Why is pandemic pay being only provided to long term care workers in the public sector? What the government should be doing this session is bringing forward a jobs plan.”
