Chase couple defrauded out of $3,000 over the phone
CHASE, B.C. — A Chase couple has been duped out of thousands of dollars after falling victim to the so-called ‘Emergency Scam’.
Chase RCMP say officers were called by a local woman Tuesday (Nov. 24). She reported her husband had taken a phone call earlier in the day from a man who was crying.
The caller convinced her husband that he was the man’s son, was in Mexico and was hurt and in jail. The man said it didn’t sound like his son, but he assumed it was because the caller was crying and claimed to be injured.
The man then received a call from someone purporting to be the son’s lawyer, who talked him through the process of sending $3,000 by MoneyGram at the post office.
