Bitcoin scam uncovered in Salmon Arm
SALMON ARM, B.C. — RCMP have uncovered another scam in the Salmon Arm area.
The scam starts with contact through a phone call, e-mail, or dating site. The scammer strikes up a relationship and builds trust with the intended victim over the phone or electronic media. Over time the scammer begins to ask for money over a series of interactions.
Sometimes the first transfer is small and the amounts then grow larger but not always. The story will change from person to person and from call to call. In some cases the scammer convinces the victim that he/she needs the money to travel to Canada to marry the victim, get out of some kind of legal trouble or to address a medical issue. These scams can take months to develop and the victim often has no idea that they are being scammed. In some cases the victim will not even believe the Police because the scammer has convinced the victim that he loves them.
These scams have been on the rise as the pandemic has forced everyone, especially the vulnerable, inside there homes. People who may be lonely are at a higher risk of falling prey to the smooth talking scammer who is willing to listen and make them feel loved. In times like these we urge everyone to reach out to family and friends in a safe way and make sure everyone has contact and does not feel alone.
