Lytton Mountie launches gift-giving program for seniors and elders

LYTTON, B.C. — An RCMP member in Lytton has spearheaded a novel new program meant to make sure the community’s elders know how much they are appreciated.

The initiative is called ‘Adopt an Elder’. Local elders or seniors — or people who know them — are asked to fill out a holiday wish list and return to the Lytton RCMP detachment before December 1.

The lists will be hung in ornaments on a Christmas tree in the detachment’s front lobby.

After the lists are collected, members of the Lytton community are asked to visit the detachment, pick up a list and purchase an item for an elder.

The items can be dropped off at the detachment, where Lytton RCMP members will wrap the gifts and personally deliver them to the seniors and elders.

Cst. Seamus O’Connell says he brought the idea forward to help the community show respect while spreading joy over the holiday season.
