Santa Claus Parade takes different shape for 40th anniversary

KAMLOOPS — This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Santa Claus Parade in Downtown Kamloops. Due to COVID-19, this year’s version of the parade will be stationary.

The Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association has decided to turn Downtown Kamloops into a storybook, using items from past floats.

People will be able to walk or drive through downtown to safely take in the decked-out businesses.

“It’s going to be set up for a month, so you can come down at your leisure any time you want,” said Sheila Minten of the KCBIA executive. “Different stores are going to be featuring different storybooks, so there’s different ones like The Nutcracker and (the 100 block of Victoria St.) is going to be all done up like Buddy the Elf.”

The decorations will be on display between Nov. 29 and Dec. 29.

Today (Oct. 29) was the last day for businesses to submit their notices of interest to participate.

Minten says the KCBIA was planning to do something “cool and different” for the 40th anniversary, but hadn’t pictured doing something quite this different.

“But, it’s a great way to do something different and celebrate and hopefully keep Downtown festive for a whole month instead of a day.”
