Kamloops mayor presented with first poppy of 2020 campaign

KAMLOOPS — The mayor of Kamloops has received the first poppy of the 2020 campaign.

Ken Christian was presented with the poppy by Kamloops Legion President Daniel Martin and Vice President of the ANAVETS B.C. Command Randy Williams outside of City Hall.

Christian says he will wear his poppy proudly on behalf of the citizens of Kamloops.

“This year is going to be different in terms of our honouring of Remembrance Day,” Christian said. “We’re going to be limited by the COVID restrictions, but we are going to broadcast that intimate ceremony for all of Kamloops to see. So, while it’s different, I still think we have to remember the sacrifices that have been made on behalf of the democracy that we enjoy.”

According to Martin, the poppy campaign officially begins next Friday, Oct. 30. However, he says people will be able to purchase poppies and wreaths at the store located at Kamloops Square in the 200 block of Seymour Street as early as Monday.

“All the funds given to us from the public, they’re trust funds,” Martin said. “So, we have a very specific allocation of funds that we can give to veterans. It’s always only to support veterans.”

“The campaign supports all our veterans,” said Williams. “Remember, that’s the main thing with the poppy is to remember our fallen and never forget.”
