KAMLOOPS – Five people have been arrested following a series of demonstrations at Trans Mountain pipeline worksites in the city.
Police were called out at 12:40 pm Thursday afternoon (Oct. 15) to a drill site on Mission Flats Road where demonstrators were blocking a road used by work trucks. Police allege three individuals refused their request to leave. Mounties arrested a 69-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman and a 57-year-old woman who had tied herself to a fence.
RCMP say a second group of demonstrators gathered at another location along the pipeline construction route and refused to leave. That led to the arrest of a 43-year-old woman when she allegedly refused to leave and instead attached herself to a bulldozer.
A 32-year-old woman was spotted destroying survey stakes and was arrested. While she was released without charges, the other four demonstrators were taken to the Kamloops RCMP detachment. They were eventually released on conditions and are scheduled to appear in court in January.
According to a the Secwepemc Sacred Woman’s Fire Council, the arrested include Hereditary Chief Segwses, Loralie Dick, April Thomas, Billie Pierre and Romilly Cavanaugh.
Police are reminding the public that demonstrators have the right to peaceful, lawful and safe protests while companies have a lawful right to complete their mandated work. RCMP say they are doing their best to protect the rights of both sides and ensure everyone is safe.
