KAMLOOPS — Registration has opened for this year’s Camp Out to End Youth Homelessness. Come December, the nighttime fundraising event will look different than in year’s past.

A Way Home Kamloops hosts a camp out event each year in December to give the community a glimpse of the conditions homeless youth try to survive in. This year, Executive Director Katherine McParland says they’re offering a way for participants to take part in-person, or from home.

“You can get creative, make your own pod, invite your extended family and spend a night in solidarity for homeless youth,” she explains. “The other option is, we have some limited spaces where we will accommodate physically distanced camping at McDonald Park. There’s only 30 spots, so please sign up quick.”

The non-profit hopes to raise $50,000 through the camp out, which will fund programs that prevent and respond to youth homelessness.

The camp out will be held December 11 from 6:00 p.m to 6:00 a.m at McDonald Park. However, A Way Home is giving extra time for participants to gather pledges and donations, with registration opening up two months ahead of time.

“At this event, our young people really take some initiative in raising awareness of what youth homelessness is,” says McParland. “We share some of our lived experiences of homelessness and housing insecurity in order to shift the paradigm of stigma for young people experiencing homelessness.”
