Virtual Raise-A-Reader Day aims to raise funds for literacy programs

KAMLOOPS — Today (Sep. 23) was Raise-A-Reader day. But, unlike previous years, volunteers were not going around town gathering donations.

Literacy in Kamloops Outreach Coordinator Fiona Clare says it is the first time in 13 years Raise-A-Reader has not been an in-person fundraising event.

Raise-A-Reader moved to an online donation structure in response to pandemic distancing guidelines.

A special edition of the newspaper with stories about literacy was also sent out to people.

Money raised through the campaign supports literacy programs for people of all ages in Barriere, Chase, Clearwater, Logan Lake and Kamloops.

“This year our campaign is Literacy Matters More Than Ever,” Clare said. “In this day and age when basically everybody has become a writer and can reach an audience, and there is a lot of information that is being put out there that might be misinformation too. So, the importance is really growing readers who can read with critical thinking skills, not just able to read the words, but be able to read the words with understanding.”
