MERRITT, B.C. — The City of Merritt has asked residents to stop lawn watering as drought conditions worsen.

According to a City news release, residents are asked to cease both lawn watering and vehicle washing effective Monday (Sept. 21).

The province’s Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development says the Coldwater River remains at drought level 4 (Extremely Dry).

CAO Sean Smith says the increased watering restrictions are being put in place to protect fish populations.

Smith says the Coldwater River is “well below the critical level for rearing fish”.

The watering restriction applies to timed automatic irrigation systems, manual sprinklers and hand watering. Residents may still water gardens and flowers by hand, as long as they are using a controlled flow nozzle.
