Terry Fox Run goes virtual due to COVID-19

KAMLOOPS — This Sunday (Sep. 20) Kamloops will recognize the 40th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope.

Organizers of the local Terry Fox Run have had to adjust the event due to COVID-19. Traditionally, the Terry Fox Run would be an event involving large groups of people running for a cause. This year, the theme is ‘One Day. Your Way,’ encouraging people to support the cause individually in any way that suits them best.

“You can sign up for the Kamloops run, you can also pick a team or an individual to sponsor as well,” said local organizer Andrea McCurrach. “And then, we’re just saying if everybody could walk, run, bike, hike, dance, do something fun, take some pictures or videos and upload them to social media with the hashtag #tryliketerry and then we can all see how everybody celebrated our amazing Canadian hero and carry on his legacy.”

The Terry Fox Run raises money to support cancer research. While COVID-19 has changed the way the event is held, it hasn’t changed the mission.

“Cancer doesn’t stop because there’s a global pandemic and neither does the need,” McCurrach said. “It’s the 40th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope and so to be able to continue Terry’s legacy 40 years on and to continue what he started so long ago I think is really important, especially when we’re all in these uncertain times. Coming together and sharing stories and finding something positive, I think that benefits everybody these days.”

There is still time to register online before Sunday’s virtual event.
