New scanner in Kelowna to serve Interior residents worried about cancer

KELOWNA — Interior residents seeking cancer scans will soon have less road to travel.

In a teleconference Wednesday (Aug. 19), B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix announced a new PET/CT scanner will soon be up and running at BC Cancer in Kelowna.

Dix says in 2019-20, more than 1,100 scans were performed on Interior residents with PET/CT scanners in the Lower Mainland.

“By combining both scans in one, a PET/CT scanner creates a more precise image of a body,” said Dix. “Having a more precise image means that doctors can more accurately diagnose cancers, see where it has spread and allows them to make more informed decisions on treatments of patients.”

Once it is operational, Dix says it is expected the Kelowna scanner will provide more than 2,000 scans per year.
