KAMLOOPS – Temperatures are expected to approach record levels through parts of the B.C. Interior this weekend as a high-pressure system settles over the southern half of the province. As a result, Environment Canada has issued a heat warning.

The warning covers the South Thompson including Kamloops, the Cariboo region south of Williams Lake, and the Fraser Canyon.

Environment Canada says the high-pressure ridge will build over the southern half of the province this weekend. Temperatures are expected to peak Sunday and Monday. Forecasters say Sunday will likely be the hottest of the days with temperatures reaching up to the high 30s and perhaps into the 40s in Lytton.

In addition, overnight temperatures will remain warm with lows in the upper teens. Environment Canada says windy locations in the Fraser Canyon could see overnight lows in the 20s.

It says health risks are higher for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors. Outdoor activities should be scheduled for cooler hours in the day.

Relief from the heat is expected to arrive by Tuesday, although highs in Kamloops are expected to reach into the 30s all week .
