Return of hockey providing needed boost for Kamloops bars and restaurants

KAMLOOPS — Hockey has reignited passion across the country, even if it’s being played during the heat of summer. It’s also helped to reignite some business at Kamloops restaurants.

“It’s been really good so far,” said bar manager at the Fox ‘N Hounds Pub Karsten Rostad. “We have had all the the Canadian teams playing. It’s been restricted with only tables of six so far, but very happy how it’s been for the first couple weeks.”

The Fox ‘N Hounds has noticed a slight bump since the return of hockey Aug. 1, as well as other professional sports. People are wanting to come in, enjoy a beer and watch the game.

“It’s definitely made an impact. Golf’s been back. We’ve had some UFC fight nights and it’s definitely been bringing some people in that wouldn’t normally come in.”

It’s been a similar story down the hill at the Shark Club Bar & Grill. Hockey has attracted more people into the establishment during the pandemic.

“Even though the playoffs have been different, and this year’s different like it’s even been before, we still see a lot of excitement,” said Acting GM at the Shark Club Vadym Nosov. “We’ve been super grateful with the amount of people that are coming through our doors. We’ve seen a lot of fans cheering for the Oilers, even though now they’re out. Oilers, Canucks, Maple Leafs.”

The only wish for places like the Fox ‘N Hounds is more Canucks games during the day to cash in on more business.

“Obviously if the Canucks make it all the way through, it’s good for business,” noted Rostad. “Right now, they’ve been playing on Friday nights normally. It would be awesome if they could play on a Monday afternoon or a Monday at lunch time. But if they make it to the Stanley Cup, it will be only good for business.”
