KAMLOOPS — Construction is underway on a new affordable housing complex in downtown Kamloops. Work has begun at 445 Fifth Avenue, where a five-storey, 60 unit rental facility will go up.

The building is a partnership between the province, the City of Kamloops and the John Howard Society of the Thompson Region.

“The land has been donated by the City of Kamloops to the John Howard Society by way of a lease,” said John Howard Society CEO Lindsay Lord. “So through that, and through the construction phase we will be able to offer out affordable housing units for 60 years.”

The complex will offer a variety of rental suites ranging from around $710 for a studio apartment to $920 for a two-bedroom unit. The John Howard Society is aiming to fill a gap when it comes to affordable accessible units.

“We will have close to six fully accessible units on the main floor, so that would be inclusive of roll-in showers, countertops adapted for accessibility, so complete and full accessibility in the building,” Lord said.

The John Howard Society will be looking at opening up its wait list for tenants in the summer of 2021, with an expected occupancy date in early 2022.
