VICTORIA — Provincial health officials are reporting 131 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C today (Aug. 10), with no new deaths.

In an update, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says that brings the total number of cases so far to 4,065. Dr. Henry says there have been no new virus-related deaths over the last three days, which keeps the death toll at 195.

Here is how the new cases were broken down over the three-day period:

  • 50 new cases between Friday and Saturday (Aug. 7 – 8)
  • 37 new cases between Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 8 – 9)
  • 44 new cases between Sunday and Monday (Aug. 9 – 10)

Interior Health’s case total grew by two since the last provincial update on Friday (Aug. 7), and is now at 391 cases.

There are now 445 active cases across the province in all health authorities. Nine people are currently being treated in hospital, with three individuals in critical care. 3,425 people have now recovered.

Dr. Henry says there are currently 1,765 people who are close contacts of those who have tested positive and are under active daily follow ups with public health.

Here is where the cases in B.C. have been found:

  • 1,220 (Vancouver Coastal)
  • 2,139 (Fraser Health)
  • 148 (Vancouver Island Health)
  • 391 (Interior Health)
  • 96 (Northern Health)
  • 71 (Reside outside of Canada)

Dr. Henry also reports there have been two new healthcare outbreaks in the Fraser Health Region – both at long term care facilities. There are currently eight active outbreaks.

Health officials also spoke to the potential for community transmission, especially between larger friend groups.

“We need to do better collectively to stop these exposure events from happening,” Dr. Henry stresses, “What I can tell you is that parties and gatherings with young people – many of whom you don’t know – even if there are fewer than 50 people, are a concern. And we have seen that.”

Dr. Henry says group gatherings with people outside of your normal bubble can provide an easy way for the virus to spread. She says there have been multiple parties broken up already, and fines have been issued.

“If your friends invite you to a party and it doesn’t feel right, don’t go. There’s no better excuse than a global pandemic to be able to do the right thing, and encourage your friends to do the right thing too.”
