VICTORIA — B.C’s health officials are reporting 47 new cases of COVID-19 today (Aug. 6), and no new deaths. One new case is being reported in the Interior Health region.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there are currently 371 active cases in B.C, with 11 people in hospital. Five people are in intensive care.

The provincial total of COVID-19 cases stands at 3,881; 3,315 people have recovered.

Here is where the cases in B.C. have been found:

  • 1,143 (Vancouver Coastal)
  • 2,045 (Fraser Health)
  • 146 (Vancouver Island Health)
  • 385 (Interior Health)
  • 93 (Northern Health)
  • 69 (Reside outside of Canada)

B.C’s death toll remains at 195 lives lost.

Dr. Henry says there have been two new health-care facility outbreaks or community outbreaks in the Vancouver Coastal region. Province-wide, there are now five long-term care facilities with active outbreaks including one in an acute care facility.

Henry tried to reach out to parents with school-aged children, who are concerned with the government’s back to school plans. “The cost to keeping our schools closed is too high,” said Dr. Henry adding that British Columbians have proven they can be successful by following health protocols that offer layers of protection.

“We’ve learned from what happened in June,” said Henry, referring to the brief reopening of schools.  Henry said every school in every district is trying to determine what it needs to do to keep children safe.  She says back to school plans may look different in every part of the province and in every different age group.  “So a very large high-school for example, may have to have an online and a load learning option as well as in-classroom options because there’s no physical way to make sure we can keep those layers of protection in place.” Henry says schools and school districts are making those decisions now.
