Homes evacuated in Penticton as fire threatens community

PENTICTON, B.C. — UPDATE: The Tactical Evacuation has been lifted in the Sage Mesa area north west of Penticton.

More than 80 homes and a golf course were evacuated in Penticton this morning (Aug. 6) as a brushfire threatened the area.

The fire was burning along Highway 97 near Sage Mesa Drive in the West Bench area of Penticton.

Penticton RCMP assisted the local fire department in the tactical evacuation and was conducting traffic control to allow fire crews in to the area.

RCMP was warning boaters on Okanagan Lake to stay clear of the area as BC Wildfire Service aircraft would be utilizing the lake.

The Penticton RCMP said it would be deploying its police vessel to ensure boaters were out of the way.
