VICTORIA — Health officials in B.C are announcing 146 new cases of COVID-19 after the B.C Day long weekend.

The new recordings bring the B.C total to 3,787 cases,. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there have been no new deaths since Friday.

Interior Health is reporting nine new cases since Friday, for a total of 377 cases since the start of the pandemic. 149 cases are now linked to Kelowna, and no new healthcare workers at Kelowna General Hospital have tested positive.

“This was not unexpected. We knew that events that had happened in the previous couple of weeks would lead to more people who had been exposed developing illness,” explains Dr. Henry. “We are now seeing people who were exposed up to two weeks ago. This is a concern because the majority are related to what happened prior to this long weekend.”

Dr. Henry notes the source of these cases is varied, but many continue to be related to private gatherings or small parties over the last month.

“We also have had a number of exposures in work places, where people have passed it amongst work colleagues,” she says, “In all of these cases, the common factors are really the same. It’s about the things that we’re doing when we’re in close contact with people. That includes talking, laughing, joking around, sharing drinks, sharing food.”

Currently, there are 319 active cases in B.C with eight people hospitalized, four of whom in critical care units.

On the recovery side 3,273 of the confirmed cases are now considered fully recovered.

Here is where the cases in B.C. have been found:

  • 1,119 (Vancouver Coastal)
  • 1,989 (Fraser Health)
  • 146 (Vancouver Island Health)
  • 377 (Interior Health)
  • 91 (Northern Health)
  • 61 (Reside outside of Canada)

Dr. Henry also reported one new health care outbreak in the Fraser Valley, at the Maple Ridge Seniors Village assisted living facility. There is a single staff case as of Tuesday. Meantime, the outbreak at Mission Memorial hospital has been declared over, leaving three active outbreaks in B.C.

B.C continues to have a number of community exposure events. Dr. Henry says there are now up to 74 cases related to the Fraser Valley Packing Plant exposure.
