SALMON ARM — UPDATED: Emergency crews managed to suppress a fire at Captain’s Cove Marina in Salmon Arm this afternoon (July 27).

Salmon Arm Fire Department Chief Brad Shirley says firefighters arrived on scene just after 1 p.m today to find 5 boats on fire, and part of the dock.

“As for a cause, the preliminary investigation determined that a boat had just been refueled, and when starting the engine, the boat exploded,” he explains, “That’s consistent with a gasoline vapour explosion, however our investigators have not confirmed this yet as the cause.”

Shirley says staff acted quickly, and were able to push the boat away from the fuel dock, and shut off the fuel source to the gas pumps.

“In doing so, unfortunately the boat on fire drifted into four others, igniting them as well as the surrounding dock system.”

The occupant of the boat suffered non life threatening injures and Shirley says he was taken to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services.

The marina is still closed for clean up work and the fire investigation, but the fire was extinguished.
