Victoria Street West improvements complete, Tranquille Road project grows

KAMLOOPS — Road work season is now in full swing across the city, as traffic delays and detours at the different projects take shape. As one major construction project finishes, another expands.

City of Kamloops Capital Projects Manager Darren Crundwell says the Victoria Street West improvements are officially complete. As of last week, several new pedestrian controlled crossings are now active, and some cosmetic touches have been added.

“We’re substantially complete. There’s a bit of clean-up, here and there, putting some signals into operation,” Crundwell explains. “The public would have heard on the radio some new pedestrian signals and whatnot going into operation, but for the most part, we’re done. We got a lot of the decorative wraps, which look really good, put onto the hydro boxes.”

With construction now complete on the West Vic project, the focus has moved to Tranquille Road in Brocklehurst. That’s where upgrades to the Sanitary Main and storm sewers are taking place. Monday (July 6) marks the beginning of Phase Two of that project, which has now closed Tranquille from Desmond Street all the way east to Holt Street. That project continues as planned, despite a slight hiccup.

“It’s something we expect with projects like this. The water main wasn’t quite in the right spot or wasn’t where we expected it to be, and it’s caused some challenges with how we’re approaching that portion of the project, basically from Desmond Street to Southill Street. We’ve got that resolved, though. That’s a constructibility issue, but it’s major utilities; a 600-diameter water main and a 900-diameter storm sewer, so we don’t just change them easily. There was a lot of thought and teamwork with the contractor and our operations group.”
