Village of Cache Creek properties on evacuation alert, with flood warning issued for Bonaparte River

CACHE CREEK — The Village of Cache Creek has issued evacuation alerts for several hundred residents, as the Bonaparte River is now under a flood warning.

According to the BC River Forecast Centre, the river is rising quickly, and flowing at a 20-year rate as of 5:30 p.m yesterday (July 4). The centre says the river initially rose after heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday and began to recede on Friday, but rose again Saturday morning.

Over the past 12 hours, the centre states the Bonaparte river has risen at a rate of about 1m3/s per hour.

As of Saturday morning, the Village of Cache Creek had placed all residences along the river’s corridor under an Evacuation Alert.

This alert covers about 175 properties, and 300 residents of the area. Residents are asked to pack up valuables and make arrangements for transportation, and any pet-care in case they need to evacuate.

Nearby watersheds are also rising, with the Deadman River reaching between a 50-100 year flow, while Criss Creek near Savona has reached higher than a 20-year flow.

The public is asked to stay clear of the rivers, and potentially unstable banks during the high-streamflow period.

As a result of the high water, the Village of Cache Creek is also under a stage 4 water restriction. It is only using one of the two wells, and residents are asked to limit their water usage for the time being.
