Unsettled weather expected to continue into July

KAMLOOPS — It was a rainy month of June in Kamloops.

According to Environment Canada Meteorologist Bobby Sekhon, the city received around 41 millimetres of precipitation last month, compared to the monthly average of 37 millimetres.

“A few millimetres more,” Sekhon said, “but that’s enough for about 110 per cent of normal.”

It was nowhere near a record month for rainfall, but it did have an impact on river levels around the Interior.

“The headwaters of the Thompson River, those were quite wet and the flows were quite strong as well, which we’re still kind of seeing,” Sekhon said.

The month was also slightly cooler than normal.

At Mount Paul Golf Course Thursday (July 2) golfers were soaking in some rare rays of sunshine.

Owner Danny Latin says the rain hasn’t been as detrimental to business as expected.

“Normally, the weather like that in June would impact us greatly,” Latin said, “but I think with everyone looking for things to do, outdoor recreation, the lack of soccer and ball and all the other sports, active people are looking for things to do and this has been an outlet for them.”

Environment Canada is expecting more unsettled weather for the next few weeks.

“We’ll continue to see a mixed bag of weather with rain and some sunny breaks and thunderstorms sprinkled in as well,” Sekhon said. “In general, the next couple of days look a little bit unsettled with a chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms.”

The forecast is showing a dryer stretch on the weekend, but Sekhon says he can’t rule out a few showers.
