Possible suspect in series of suspicious fires

KAMLOOPS — RCMP apparently have a suspect in custody after a series of suspicious fires in the past couple of weeks. A number of dumpster, trash bins, and grass fires have been reported, and Saturday night, a suspect was apparently caught.

Kamloops Fire and Rescue have confirmed that they have recently attended reported grass fires, dumpster fires and other suspicious blazes, including a fire set outside the Social Butterflies Activity and Learning Centre on Seymour Street June 18.

The latest incident believed part of this string occurred Saturday night when someone tried to light a fire under the big display sign outside the Tournament Capital Centre on McGill Road. Platoon Captain Daryl Cooper says with all the rain Saturday, it turned out to be a pretty fruitless attempt, but Cooper said if the sign had caught fire, there would have been a significant amount of damage.

RCMP are expected to have a news release later today.
