Kamloops SPCA bringing in more animals ahead of gradual reopening

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops SPCA is beginning to look into what it will take to re-open its Animal Care Centre to the public after COVID-19 caused its closure.

Throughout the pandemic, the SPCA has received community support in the form of fostering and donations.

Early on, the SPCA had to decrease the number of animals in the shelter in order to prepare for emergency cases. The shelter is now gradually accepting more animals.

“Kitten season has hit us full-swing,” said Hayley Bennett, community engagement manager with the Kamloops SPCA. “The last time I heard, I think we have something like — and this isn’t necessarily in shelter, this can be with fosters, this can be expecting and incoming — but I think we had more than 30 kittens accounted for; in our responsibility, that is.”

The doors to the building remain locked to the public, with all adoptions and surrenders being scheduled.

No date has been set for re-opening, but work is being done behind the scenes to prepare to do it safely.

“Some of the services we weren’t able to do before are slowly, slowly starting to open up a little bit, but we’re being very cautious,” Bennett said. “We just want to make sure we’re keeping our staff, volunteers, the public and the animals’ safety in mind at each turn.”
