KAMLOOPS — Students taking university-level courses online via open learning resources will have a simpler way to get credit for their studies, thanks in part to Thompson Rivers University (TRU).

In a news release, TRU says it has become the first institution in North America to offer students international credential transfer for the free online courses they are taking.

The school is also one of the first globally to recognize micro-credit transfers for those looking to achieve a university-level qualification.

“TRU has led the way to implementing an international micro-credentialling system with pathways to achieving a university qualification,” said Wayne Mackintosh of the Open Education Resource universitas, a global network of post-secondary institutions working to make education more affordable and accessible.

Open education courses are completely online-based, meaning students don’t have to pay for expensive textbooks and other resources. Typically, students take courses in “micro” blocks and only need to pay if they want to be assessed for university credit.

Don Poirier, TRU’s associate vice-president of Open Learning, says the school believes in decreasing barriers to post-secondary education.
