IIO called to investigate Williams Lake arrest
WILLIAMS LAKE – An investigation has begun to determine whether police acted appropriately to apprehend a man in Williams Lake. The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is looking into the matter.
The incident began just before 7:00pm Sunday night (May 31), when police were called out to find a man who was thought to be suffering from a mental health crisis.
Following a search, police say the man attempted to flee on a motorcycle. A second officer pursued the motorcycle on Highway 20, allegedly for several blocks. At that point, police say the man lost control of the bike and crashed. Police say the crash occurred after the police vehicle and the motorcycle “interacted”.
The man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
