High water forces boat launch, trail closures in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — As the waters of the North and South Thompson Rivers continue to rise, the City of Kamloops is slowly closing access to low-lying areas.

According to a news release issued Wednesday (May 27), the Rivers Trail between Pioneer Park and Riverside Park was closed Wednesday morning.

The trail through Riverside Park had already been closed to make way for flood protection measures. The beach at Riverside Park is also closed.

Then Friday (May 29), the City will close its boat launches at Pioneer Park, McArthur Island and Thompson Drive in Valleyview. The move is meant to protect boaters’ safety and limit wakes.

Taking the boat out onto the water is not recommended right now because of the amount of debris present in the rivers. The City says anyone boating should keep speeds low and use extreme caution. It notes passage under the rail bridge near Sandman Centre may not be possible as levels rise.
