Hikers stuck near Peterson Creek falls pulled to safety by Kamloops Fire Rescue

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue is reminding hikers to stick with safe routes, after several people found themselves stuck in Peterson Creek park yesterday (May 23).

Around 2:45 p.m on Saturday, KFR was called to the Peterson Creek falls area for three people who had climbed to a spot they were unable to get down from.

Platoon Captain Darryl Cooper says crews conducted a rope rescue and were able to get the two children and one adult out safely. Aside from some minor cuts and scrapes, KFR says the three people involved were not injured as a result.

As the weather warms, and more people get outside for hikes, Cooper says they want to remind residents to choose safe routes.

“Please stay on the marked trails. A lot of the time it looks like it’s an easy route up, but then you’ve gone halfway up and you can’t see the next root, and then it’s hard to go back down,” he notes, “It’s a really common thing that we have, and then we get called in. So if you can stay on the marked trails, it’d be really appreciated, and a lot safer.”

Kamloops Fire Rescue also asks the public to play it safe near the riverbanks this time of year, as the extra debris in the river makes the high water particularly dangerous.
