Special weather statement issued for South Thompson, with heavy rain expected

KAMLOOPS — A special weather statement has been issued for the South Thompson today (May 17), with heavy rainfall expected in the next 24 hours.

According to meteorologist Lisa Ervin, a frontal system will be moving across southern B.C this morning, and in its wake, an unstable atmosphere will make conditions that could bring showers and thunderstorms.

“Not only for the South Thompson area, but it actually stretches across a very broad area from Castlegar, up through the Okanagan, Merritt, Kamloops of course, Ashcroft / Cache Creek, and likely even to extend into the North Fraser Canyon as we do some updates later today.”

Ervin says total rainfall amounts between 10 – 20 mm are possible by Monday morning. Higher precipitation is normal for these areas in May and June, but Ervin says the rainfall rate in such a short period of time is why the statement was issued.

“We’re looking an even higher chance of thunderstorms rolling through the area throughout tonight into Monday morning,” she notes, “After that, we’ll start to see things sort of calming down a little bit. Showers ending in the morning and a mix of sun and cloud for the afternoon, but potentially more showers rolling back through the area late Monday afternoon into Monday evening.”
