Report shows childcare shortfall in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — A report to Kamloops council has found a huge shortfall in the number of childcare spaces in the city.

The report, compiled by a large and diverse group of stakeholders, found while there are more than 12,000 children 12 years old or younger in the city — there are only about 3,300 licensed and registered spaces.

It goes on to say 22 out of the 24 neighbourhoods surveyed in the city have insufficient space availability.

Recreation, Social Development and Culture Manager Barb Berger says there is now a better idea of what’s needed.

“We have created an inventory of all existing licensed and registered childcare spaces for children aged 12 and under,” said Berger. “We have gone about collecting information regarding childcare space access and needs of the community — and this is specifically underserved areas of care and underserved areas of the community.”

Berger notes staff will discuss recommendations — and talk about where the City of Kamloops fits in – at a meeting later in May.
