KAMLOOPS — The emotional impact of the mass shooting that killed 22 people in Nova Scotia has been felt across the nation.

Locally, the Kamloops United Church (KUC) paid tribute to the victims this afternoon (Apr. 24).

The national church had informed administrative staff at KUC that churches in Nova Scotia were requesting bells to ring for the victims.

At 2:00 p.m., church members rang handbells and the organ sounded for every life lost in the tragedy.

“With this separation there’s such a feeling of loss and when this happened I know a lot of the church community really felt it keenly,” said Administrative Manager Florence Ballard. “So when this opportunity came up we took advantage to say, ‘Yes, we’d like to participate.’

“We have lots of bell ringers and the organ was playing from the inside as well, and we thought with a minimal number of people we could social distance and we let our church community know that we were doing this at 2:00, to drive by. As you saw, some people came out and stood, and there were lots of folks in cars going by.”
