Workers in Interior Health region warned of potential virus exposure from Alberta work camp

KAMLOOPS — Interior Health is warning certain residents of potential COVID-19 exposure, after multiple people working at an Alberta-based oil sands project site tested positive.

In a release from the health authority, it states that on April 15, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, had reported an outbreak of COVID-19 north of Fort McMurray at the Kearl Lake oil sands project.

So far 12 people connected to the work camp have tested positive for the virus.

Interior Health states that many residents in the IH region travel to camps in Alberta for work, and there is potential for virus transmission between the provinces.

IHA is recommending that people who were at this site, or were in contact with someone from this site self-isolate for 14 days from their last exposure to the site, or flights home.

Anyone in the community who is experiencing symptoms such as a fever, or dry cough, is asked to immediately self-isolate for a 14 day period as well.
